Hatha yoga is in basic terms is a set of physical postures and sequences designed to balance the mind, body and spirit, and to align the skin, muscles and bones in preparation for meditation. The postures and sequences were also designed to open many channels throughout the body also know as nadis for energy or prana to flow freely, especially in the spine.

Hatha Yoga is the root of all Yoga. it was the first style of yoga practised by the sages of India and it is the basis in which all other styles of yoga have been created. Ashatnga yoga, Vinyasa yoga, power yoga and all other styles of yoga have all come from the original form of hatha yoga.
Hatha yoga has proven to have both the physical, mental and spiritual benefits from regular practice.

What To Expect in a Hatha Yoga Class?

In a Hatha yoga class you can expect to preform some type of breathing exercise (pranayama), a number of standing, sitting and lying postures and stretches with little or no flow in between and a short final meditation. You should end the class feeling longer, looser and more relaxed. Hatha yoga classes are a good class for beginner to learn some of the fundamental asanas.

What About Hatha Flow?

Just to confuse things more, some studios (like us) throw something called hatha flow into the mix. hold on, didn’t we just say that hatha yoga had little or no flow?

Hatha Flow classes will give you all the benefits of a standard Hatha yoga class, while at the same time giving you a sense of fluidity as the teacher strings certain poses one after the other in order keep your body active and engaged while focusing the mind on the task at hand


Is Hatha Yoga for You?

Hatha Yoga in Chiang Mai is popular and there are many experienced teacher here to learn from. Try a hatha class if the idea of a gentle/moderately challenging yoga appeals to you or seems right for your level of physical fitness. It can be a great introduction to yoga, but definitely shouldn’t be mistaken for easy yoga since it can still be quite challenging both physically and mentally. If you go into a hatha class and it feels too slow or not active enough, don’t give up on yoga completely, remember that every teacher has a different style of teaching and its only a matter of time before you find that teacher that resonates with you.

There are many faster-paced, more athletic ways to do yoga if thats what you prefer Try a vinyasa or ashtanga class and see if that is more your speed.

Hatha Alignment Class

A flowing Hatha Yoga class incorporating slow and graceful movements between poses, while working with the breath to create strength, steadiness and softness through a number of poses and sequences, working with the mind and body to help open and unblock energy channels throughout the body allowing prana to flow freely, leaving you feeling vitalized and focused.
In this class we will go through a complete breakdown of certain poses to help you align your body correctly and understand exactly how the pose should feel, what muscles should be engaged, and what muscles should be relaxed, how you should be breathing, and what you should be focusing on. we will use props and straps to help you improve your alignment and loose bad postural habits.
